South Korea’s President Calls on North Korea to Respond to Peace Efforts

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged North Korea to respond to what he described as Seoul’s sincere efforts toward peace, while cautioning that instability stemming from the Middle East should not extend to the Korean Peninsula, according to reports.

In remarks marking the eighth anniversary of the Panmunjom Declaration, Lee said: “We will proactively take steps that we can initiate first to restore inter-Korean trust and achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

The Panmunjom Declaration, signed in April 2018, was agreed upon by then South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their meeting in the truce village of Panmunjom, a symbolic location along the heavily fortified border.

Lee also expressed hope that Pyongyang would recognize Seoul’s intentions, stating that North Korea “will also trust our government's sincerity and respond,” in comments delivered through a written message presented in parliament.

The two Koreas remain technically in a state of war, as the 1950–53 Korean War concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. As part of its security arrangement, South Korea continues to host approximately 28,500 US troops.

Reaffirming his administration’s direction, Lee said his government would “steadfastly pursue a policy of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.”

Since assuming office in June, Lee has adjusted South Korea’s approach to North Korea compared to his predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office after declaring martial law in December 2024.

Prosecutors in South Korea have also accused Yoon of ordering drone operations into Pyongyang, allegedly intended to provoke North Korea and justify his decision to impose emergency rule.
